The Oscar-winning actress has become a mother for the second time with Laila, a three-year-old girl from Louisiana who had previously been in foster care.

The Gravity actress told People magazine: "When I look at Laila, there is no doubt in my mind that she was supposed to be here.

"I can tell you absolutely, the exact right children came to me at the exact right time."

Sandra is also mum to five-year-old son Louis, who she adopted in 2010.

The star says the siblings have already formed an unbreakable bond, with Louis "spearheading the journey" to help welcome Laila (pronounced Lila), into the family.

Sandra also explained she was worried about protecting Laila's privacy during the adoption process, and that it felt "very much like witness protection".

News of the adoption first came to light in Octoberbut she dismissed the claims at a press conference for her film Our Brand Is Crisis.

When a journalist congratulated her on her new arrival, she replied: "There is only one adopted child in my household and his name is Louis."

Her response now seems to indicate that the adoption process was not then complete, with Laila only being fostered by her at this point.

The star told People: "I knew she was scared, and all I wanted was for her to know Louis and I weren't going anywhere.

"My family is blended and diverse, nutty, and loving and understanding. That's a family."

Touching family photos released by the publication were taken by her boyfriend, photographer Bryan Randall.

The 51-year-old said she chose to speak about the adoption to shine a light on more than 415,000 children currently in foster care in the US.
