What children are availible for adoption in China?

Children range in age from infant to 13 years old. Both boys and girls are available. Parents adopting through our China program must be open to a child with medical needs, ranging from minor/correctable issues to more moderate/severe medical needs. Healthy older children from 6-13 are also in need of families.

The medical information is comprehensive and contains a number of test results including HIV and hepatitis. Developmental milestones are indicated along with growth charts. When making your decision to accept or decline an assignment, you should have enough medical information to make an informed decision. A high quality medical report does not mean that undiagnosed or undiscoverable medical problems do not exist. It does mean that medical problems are more likely to have been discovered.

How long does it take to adopt a child from China?

The process for a Waiting Child from China is currently taking 12-18 months from application to placement. The wait for a referral after the home study is completed is currently taking an average of 0-6 months.

Are single women allowed to adopt from China?

Yes, single women are allowed to adopt from China through the Special Focus Program and should contact AW for information on additional application requirements outlined by the CCCWA.

Will I be required to travel to China?

Foreign travel is required. The trips are well organized and go smoothly. Since you are placed with the child very early in the trip, your primary focus needs to be on parenting the child, not the itinerary. You will be in and out of China in two weeks.

Can only one parent travel?

When possible, we recommend that both parents travel to China to pick up their child and complete the adoption process; however, a family can complete the process with only one parent traveling. A family must obtain a Power of Attorney and complete additional documentation. When only one parent travels, we recommend that the individual traveling still bring a travel partner to assist them and help provide support during the trip.
